Should I upgrade my Access 97 application to Access 2000 or 2002 before upsizing?

We suggest following these steps to have a successful upsize:

  1. run SSW Upsizing PRO! first on your Access 97 database (SSW Upsizing PRO! is written in Access 2000 so needs 2000, 2002 or 2003 to run - however it will analyze your data.mdb whether it be in Access 97, 2000 and 2002)
  2. fix all errors reported by SSW Upsizing PRO!
  3. use Access 2002 or 2003 to convert your Access 97 application database
  4. use Access 2002 or 2003 to upsize your database (Microsoft's Upsizing Wizard in Access 2002 is the best tool for upsizing. Each subsequent version has become better so try and use the latest version)

Note: all these suggestions are referring to your backend, if your front end app in Access 97 – it does not need updating to Access 2002 or 2003 – in fact there is a strong argument for leaving it in Access 97.
